Her first husband was a dancing partner and an artistic success, but financially, she alleged, not an adequate provider.
Her second husband was a business man and proved, she now charges, too jealous of her artistic career.
Besides, he consoled himself, during her absence on business, with a hilarious party given to the entire cabaret chorus of a local cafe, the complaint recites.
Which, though it might not unduly excite the jealousy of a beautiful and accomplished wife, must in its aftermath of broken cut glass and shattered chinaware-de-luxe arouse the resentment of an absent housewife.
The party, according to the divorce complaint filed yesterday, took place at the Lombard apartments, 722 Taylor street, in September of last year while Mrs. Lombard was on a professional visit in Los Angeles. The evidence, corpus delecti of the feast, she found upon her return.
The alleged fact that Lombard refused to allow her five-year-old son, Douglas Crane, whose father was the dancer, to sit at the table with them during dinner is cited by Mrs. Lombard among various acts of alleged cruelty. She accuses Lombard of remaining away from home on frequent occasions and declining to explain where he had been. He refused to permit her to entertain her own friends, she alleges, and insisted upon her entertaining his. She declares that he is jealous of her little son and continually nagged an harassed her.
The Lombards were married in this city December 11, 1919, and separated July 1 of this year.
Prior to her marriage to Lombard, Mrs. Lombard was divorced from Douglas Crane November 13, 1919, the decree being granted by Superior Judge Edward Mogan on her complaint, which alleged failure to provide and desertion. She was married to Crane in New York City in April, 1913, and the couple separated in May, 1917.
Mrs. Lombard does not mention the subject of alimony in her complaint and states that the community property includes only the furniture in the apartments on Taylor street. with Ivy Frances Nichols Payne on 5 August 1922 at San Francisco Examiner, San Francisco, San Francisco County, CA, USA.10 Martin Gay Lombard and Ivy Frances Nichols Payne were divorced after 5 August 1922 at San Francisco, San Francisco County, CA, USA.11,9,10 Martin Gay Lombard appeared on the census of 6 April 1930 at 1725 Jones Street, San Francisco, San Francisco County, CA, USA; LOMBARD, Gay - Head, renting, $110/month, male, white, age 55, divorced, married (1) at age 22, b. American Fork/The first bank in American Fork was opened in 1891 by two enterprising young men from the East, Gay Lombard and Henry C. Johnson who were eighteen and twenty-three years of age respectively. Mr. Johnson who has spent the more than sixty intervening years in American Fork tells this story of the early beginning of the bank.
The boys were school friends in a private school in Cornwall, Conn. They spent two vacations at the home of each and young Lombard's father, Benjamin Lombard, head of the Lombard Investment Company of Boston and New York, took a liking to Henry and gave him a position in his company while Gay went to another school up the Hudson River to learn the banking business. With the impetuosity of youth, Gay suddenly left school, returned to Boston and asked Henry how he would like to go West. Mr. Lombard agreed and told the boys to go west of the Mississippi; also, that he would give them letters of introduction, $10,000 and the equipment for a building.
One of the letters was to Denver and another to Salt Lake City. The boys were not much impressed with Denver, so they came on to Salt Lake City where they were advised that both Springville and American Fork needed banks. Henry went to Springville and Gay came to American Fork. They decided to open the bank in American Fork because it was closer to Utah Lake. They were beginning to get homesick for the water bound country which had been their home. They rented the southeast room in the new Grant Hotel, equipped it with a safe, a counter and other bare necessities which they purchased second hand, and opened for business. William Henry Grant, who built the hotel, became the first depositor.
Before this time, Mr. Chipman, proprietor of the Chipman Mercantile Company had done a sort of banking for some of the livestock men in the town because he had the only safe where money could be deposited until needed. After receiving favorable information regarding the credit rating of the young bankers, he turned over to them $120,000 worth of business which was an unbelievably good stroke of luck. Within three years Mr. Chipman joined them as a partner and the bank was renamed Chipman and Lombard. Not long after, young Lombard again felt the wanderlust and sold out to his partner and went to Oregon where he subsequently opened four banks and operated a grain business. Mr. Johnson stayed on as bookkeeper for the bank with the name now changed to Bank of American Fork. in 1952.12
