William H. Hyde Jr., a retired lawyer and World War II combat officer who had worked for the Internal Revenue Service and Baltimore's Housing Department, died of lung cancer Monday at St. Agnes Hospital. The Charlestown Retirement Community resident was 94.

Mr. Hyde was born and raised in Washington. He was a 1930 graduate of Gonzaga High School and served in the Marine Corps Reserve until 1935. After earning an accounting degree that year from Benjamin Franklin University in Washington, he began his career with the IRS.

During the war, he became an Army artillery observer and fought at Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He won a battlefield promotion to lieutenant and was with forces that liberated Paris in 1944.

While back with the IRS, Mr. Hyde took four years of night classes to earn his law degree in 1955 from the University of Baltimore. For the next 14 years, until retiring from the federal government, he prosecuted tax evasion cases.

He worked for a year as a lawyer for the firm of Fedder and Garten before joining the city Housing Department in 1970. He retired in 1976.

A longtime Catonsville resident who moved to the retirement community nearly a decade ago, he was an avid Orioles and Ravens fan and enjoyed reading biographies and books about World War II.

His wife of 60 years, the former Evelyn Sult, died in 2006.

A memorial Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Monday in Our Lady of the Angels Chapel at Charlestown, 701 Maiden Choice Lane.

Surviving are two sons, Michael F. Hyde of Owings Mills and Joseph M. Hyde of Baltimore; five daughters, Rebecca M. Hyde of Columbia, Elizabeth A. Fleischhacker of San Diego, Martha L. Hyde of Canyon, Texas, Mary E. Harris of Damascus, Montgomery County, and Catherine V. Hyde of Woodstock, Howard County; and five grandchildren. on 3 March 2007 at Baltimore Sun, Baltimore, Baltimore County, MD, USA.
